This semester, Mrs. Matherne's class did a unit on the purpose of a newspaper. After looking at several Hattiesburg newspapers, each student signed up for a column, where they went around and interviewed various members of the Thames staff. Each student then typed their article and the class took a field trip to the ARC house and the print shop at Thames to learn more about the printing process. After newspapers were printed, students put their selling skills to use and sold each issue for $1.00. All proceeds went to visit the Blue Jack Ridge Corn Maze in November. Lastly, the journalism and video production staff from The University of Southern Mississippi paid the class a visit to show a demonstration video on how to make a newspaper. The sale for the newspaper was such a success that Mrs. Matherne's class will continue make quarterly editions and are considering selling subscriptions. Stay tuned for more information!
